It is now grown in tropical regions around the world, including the Caribbean, Central America, Southeast Asia, and Africa.

Breadfruit thrives in hot, humid tropical climates.

It prefers well-drained, sandy loam soils but can tolerate a variety of soil types, including limestone and volcanic soils.

  • Tree: Breadfruit trees are large, evergreen trees that can grow up to 85 feet tall. They have large, glossy, dark green leaves that are deeply cut into pinnate lobes.
  • Fruit: The fruit is round to oval, typically 4-8 inches in diameter. When mature, it has a green to yellowish-green skin with a spiky or bumpy texture.
  • The flesh of the breadfruit is creamy and starchy, resembling the texture of a potato when cooked.
  • When baked or roasted, the flesh takes on a bread-like texture and flavor, which is where it gets its name.
